Chichicastenango: A Journey to the Heart of the Living Mayan Culture

Nestled in the mountains of the Guatemalan highlands, Chichicastenango – affectionately known as “Chichi” – is one of Guatemala’s most authentic and captivating destinations. Famous for its indigenous market, considered one of the largest and most colorful in Latin America, this place is a vibrant window into the living traditions of the Maya Quiché people.

On Thursdays and Sundays, the Chichicastenango market comes alive with handmade crafts, embroidered textiles, traditional masks, incense, fruits, flowers and an explosion of colors, aromas and sounds. But beyond commerce, Chichi is a space where the ancestral and the contemporary intertwine in every corner.

The Church of Santo Tomás, built on an ancient Mayan platform, is a perfect example of religious syncretism: on its steps, Catholic rituals coexist with Mayan ceremonies that have lasted for centuries. Nearby, the Chichicastenango Cemetery surprises with its brightly painted tombs and spiritual ceremonies that connect with the ancestral world.
